Soft vs. Rigid: Choose the Support Level for Your Line

Cervical collar types differ in how much structure they add and who buys them. Use this guide to decide which levels your assortment needs.

Support level
Typical construction
Structure
Typical buyers
Soft
Single-density PU foam, knit cover, hook-and-loop closure
Flexible; allows some head and neck movement
Pharmacy, online retail, home care
Firm / Semi-Rigid
Firm or dual-density foam, or foam with a thermoplastic insert
More structure than soft foam, still fully padded
Medical supply, DME, clinics
Rigid Two-Piece
Thermoformed foam shells with plastic reinforcement; optional trachea opening
Restricts more motion than foam collars
Hospitals, DME, post-operative programs
Rigid Adjustable
One-piece plastic collar with height settings and chin support
Rigid; one collar covers several neck heights
EMS, hospitals, emergency supply
Cervical Thoracic (CTO)
Rigid collar with chest and back extension
Extends support to the upper thoracic area
Hospitals, orthotic suppliers

Choosing a collar for a patient is a clinical decision. This guide describes construction only.

US distributors often classify collars by HCPCS code, for example L0120 for flexible foam collars and L0172 / L0174 for semi-rigid two-piece collars. Coding responsibility sits with the seller of record.

What End Users Complain About, and How We Build Around It

Most negative collar reviews are not about the idea of wearing a collar. They are about heat, itch, height and closures, and each of these can be specified before bulk production.

“It’s Too Hot.”

Foam traps heat. We adjust cover yarn, fabric weight and knit structure, and can add breathable or cooling-touch covers.

“It Itches Where It Touches.”

Rough fabric and exposed hook tape rub the skin. We bind the edges, cover the hook tape and specify skin-side fabrics.

“It Pushes My Chin Up.”

One height does not fit every neck. We grade front height separately from circumference and can add a contoured chin rest.

“The Closure Won’t Hold.”

A short overlap or weak hook-and-loop lets the collar open. We set the overlap length for each size and specify closure strength.

“It Moves at Night.”

Standard collars twist during sleep. Sleeping styles use a lower profile, softer edges and a closure placed away from pressure points.

“It Went Flat After a Few Weeks.”

Low-resilience foam loses shape. We specify foam density and thickness, and use removable covers so the foam is never machine-washed.

Sizing Built on Circumference and Height

A collar needs two measurements to fit. We grade both, so your packaging tells buyers exactly which collar to choose.

1

Front Height

Measured from the top of the shoulder to the tip of the chin. It affects comfort more than circumference does, and short necks need their own height.

2 inShort necks2.5 inNarrow3 inAverage3.5 inWide4 inTall
2

Neck Circumference

Measured around the neck. Grade it into sizes, or offer a universal one-size collar to simplify stocking. Many programs carry both.

M 13–16 in

Example ranges based on common market sizing for soft collars. Rigid styles use their own height sizes. Final grading is set per program.

Construction and Materials You Can Specify

Every collar is built in layers. Choose each one for your market and price point; soft collars simply skip the rigid layer.

Sleeping Cervical Collars: What Changes from a Standard Collar

Collars for overnight wear sell to a different buyer and collect different reviews. These are the variables we adjust.

  1. 01

    Lower Profile

A reduced front height and thinner side walls keep the collar comfortable when lying down, without pressing on the jaw.

  2. 02

    Softer Edges

Rounded foam edges and bound seams reduce pressure where the collar meets the ears and collarbone.

  3. 03

    Heat Management

Breathable knit or mesh covers, with optional ventilation channels in the foam.

  4. 04

    Stays in Place

The closure sits away from the back of the head, with enough overlap to hold during movement.

  5. 05

    Easy Care

Removable, machine-washable covers, with spare covers available as add-ons.

Labeling, Instructions and Claims Boundaries

Cervical collars are regulated as medical devices in many markets, and the packaging often draws more scrutiny than the collar itself. We help you get the package right.

What Goes on the Package

A size chart with both measurements, fitting steps, care instructions, material content, warnings, and your brand and importer details.

Instructions for Use

Fitting and removal steps, skin checks, cleaning, and a clear note that wear time should follow a healthcare professional’s direction.

Claims We Keep Out

We describe structure and materials. Pain relief, healing or treatment claims need your own regulatory basis in your market.

Your Market, Your Registration

Registration and listing requirements depend on your market and on who acts as the legal manufacturer. We provide construction and material information to support your documentation.

Custom Cervical Collar Manufacturing FAQ

Questions buyers ask most before sampling. Anything else, send it with your inquiry.

What types of cervical collars do you manufacture?

Soft foam, firm-density and sleeping collars, foam neck braces with plastic support, Philadelphia-style two-piece collars, adjustable rigid collars, cervical thoracic orthoses, neck support belts and inflatable traction collars, plus replacement covers and pads.

A soft collar is padded foam that allows some movement. A hard collar uses rigid plastic or thermoformed shells and restricts more motion. Which one a patient needs is a clinical decision.

In retail the two terms are often used interchangeably. In medical supply, “cervical collar” usually means a collar around the neck, while “neck brace” can also cover braces with chest and back extensions.

By neck circumference and by the height from the top of the shoulder to the chin. We build size charts on both and can add universal or short-neck sizes.

We select latex-free materials on request and confirm the material content for your label.

Rigid and thermoformed styles may need molds. Tooling is evaluated and quoted for each project.
